Banfield missed the chance to climb to second in the Clausura standings as they lost 4-3 at home to Quilmes yesterday.

Sebastian Mendez's side were looking for their third straight win but fell behind at the Estadio Florencio Sola to Bernardo Romeo's goal in the 23rd minute. Marcelo Quinteros levelled within a minute for Banfield but Miguel Caneo restored Quilmes' advantage with 13 minutes of the first half remaining.

Goals from Facundo Ferreyra (52) and Alejandro Barbaro (60) looked set to earn Banfield a win but Quilmes came storming back thanks to two inspired substitutions. Pablo Vazquez, on for Romeo in the 71st minute, made it 3-3 five minutes after coming on and Uruguayan Martin Cauteruccio, who entered the fray ten minutes into the second half, grabbed the winner with six minutes to go.

The win took Quilmes up four places to 15th, leapfrogging Gimnasia who lost 2-1 at home to bottom side Newell's Old Boys in La Plata. Veteran forward Guillermo Barros Schelotto put Gimnasia 1-0 up in the 33rd minute but the men from Rosario rallied late on as Rolando Schiavi levelled from the penalty spot in the 75th minute, with Gimnasia also reduced to ten men at that point following the dismissal of Abel Masuero.

The winner came nine minutes from time from Claudio Bieler, although Newell's remain three adrift of the rest, with this victory just their second of the Clausura campaign.
