Idrissou strike stuns Dortmund
Borussia Monchengladbach moved off the bottom of the Bundesliga thanks to a surprise 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund which keeps the league title race open for another week.
Mohamadou Idrissou's goal after 35 minutes was enough to win the game and take Gladbach above St Pauli, still four points from safety with three games of the season remaining. Dortmund's lead at the top of the table has now been cut to five points as a result of the loss and Bayer Leverkusen's 2-1 win over Hoffenheim.
Mario Gotze almost gave Dortmund a dream start when he headed just over the crossbar within the first minute. Gotze looked inspired as he tested Marc Andre ter Stegen with a powerful shot in the tenth minute which the Gladbach goalkeeper was only just able to divert over the crossbar with his foot.
Ter Stegen got it all wrong after half an hour when he drifted out of his goal and Robert Lewandowski lobbed the ball towards the vacant goal, but Tony Jantschke covered to clear the ball before it crossed the goalline. Five minutes later, the home team went ahead with their first real chance of the game.
Idrissou showed an excellent burst of pace to beat Neven Subotic to the ball from Juan Arango's pass and he then showed skill and vision to beat Roman Weidenfeller with a well-placed shot into the right-hand corner.
Gotze and Lewandowski combined again just before the break, but the latter's shot was once again saved by ter Stegen. Dortmund increased the pressure in the second half and Gotze rattled the crossbar in the 68th minute with an unstoppable shot from 25 yards. The woodwork rattled again in the 76th minute when Marcel Schmelzer's shot was diverted onto the post by ter Stegen.
Though, there was no way through for Dortmund, whose fans will now have to wait until next weekend to see if they can seal the Bundesliga title early.
