Daum quotes Churchil to rouse Frankfurt
Eintracht Frankfurt coach Christoph Daum quoted Sir Winston Churchill to remind his team that their battle against relegation is not over after yesterday's 1-0 defeat at Hoffenheim.
That result left Daum without a victory in his first two games in charge since replacing Michael Skibbe as coach, and the club is now just four points and one position above the relegation zone with four games of the season remaining.
"We have got to follow the wisdom of Winston Churchill, who said 'never give in'," said Daum afterwards. "We are still in a situation where, despite this defeat, our destiny is in our own hands. We have got to keep looking forwards and keep this attitude until the very end of the season."
The win for Hoffenheim assured them of Bundesliga football next season, although they are too far behind the top five to still mount a challenge for a place in Europe next season.
Their coach Marco Pezzaiuoli, who will return to his former position of assistant coach next season, admitted his side's football reflects their league situation. "This was certainly not a pretty game, but I am glad that we got the three points," he said.
"After a turbulent week, it was not easy for the team so that makes me all the more happy that, despite the pressure, we have broken through the 40-point mark."
