The Philadelphia Union stayed top of Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference but they were denied all three points against the Seattle Sounders as Alvaro Fernandez scored in stoppage time for a 1-1 draw.

The Union had looked set for all three points as their lead provided by Carlos Ruiz in the 32nd minute stuck for nearly an hour.

Red Bull New York moved to within two points of Philadelphia in second as they hammered the San Jose Earthquakes 3-0. The game was all but over inside 15 minutes as Luke Rodgers bagged a double, before Thierry Henry got on the scoresheet for the first time in MLS three minutes from the end.

The Columbus Crew remained level on points with New York as Robbie Rogers' strike eight minutes after the break gave them a 1-0 win over Sporting Kansas City.

DC United won 3-0 at ten-man Toronto FC to leapfrog their opponents in the table. United were 2-0 up inside ten minutes thanks to strikes from Chris Pontius and Charlie Davies, then Pontius grabbed his second after Ty Harden was sent off four minutes after the break.

In the West, winless Chivas USA claimed a goalless draw at the Vancouver Whitecaps.
