Bordeaux's woeful season took another hapless turn as they failed to score against Ligue 1's rock-bottom club Arles-Avignon in a 0-0 draw. Bordeaux came into the match in eighth and struggling to qualify for the UEFA Europa League and despite having some chances tonight, the hosts hardly dominated their visitors at the Stade Chaban Delmas.
Midfielder Thomas Ayasse had an early chance when in the opening minute with a shot from the edge of the box. While he kept his effort on target, it was tame enough for Cedric Carrasso to save easily enough. Bordeaux carved out their first chance ten minutes in. Anthony Modeste made solid progress down the left flank, beating two defenders, before firing in a shot which Vincent Plante was equal to.
The flailing champions had another opportunity in the 16th minute when Fabien Laurenti, under pressure, passed the ball back to Plante without looking where his goalkeeper was, forcing Plante to anxiously sprint to clear the ball on the line. Bordeaux came close 11 minutes before the break when Jaroslav Plasil's free-kick went just over.
The hosts' pressure continued after the break. Plasil had another chance in the 62nd minute as Plante denied him not once, but twice. After the home side seemed to give up hope, Arles substitute Franck Djadjedje was played in nicely, but was denied by Carrasso's save five minutes from time.
A minute into added time Plasil's free-kick found Fernando Menegazzo, but the forward's first-time shot went just over the bar, compounding the hosts' misery.
