A goal from Jose Manuel Jurado made it a return to forget for Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath as his new side was defeated 1-0 by his former employers at the Arena AufSchalke.

Just over three weeks after sitting on the home team's bench in Gelsenkirchen, Magath took his place in the opposite dugout and saw a result he had grown a bit too familiar with while in charge of Schalke, a loss.

Jurado, a man Magath signed for Schalke last summer, earned the home side all three points to take them into the top half of the Bundesliga and leave the Wolves inside the bottom three. The relegation battle for Wolfsburg is now more serious with this loss, which leaves the Wolves languishing inside the bottom three with five games of the season remaining.

Schalke started where they had left off against Inter Milan in midweek, with a confident attacking style of play. However, the Wolves were well drilled in defence and restricted the home team to shots from distance.

The game came to life in the second half and a man who Magath had dropped to the reserves, Alexander Baumjohann, came closer to opening the scoring in the 62nd minute, but his deflected shot hit the crossbar. Moments later, the inspired Baumjohann's shot from 25 yards was saved by Diego Benaglio.

Jurado put the home side in front 15 minutes from time when he received the ball from Jefferson Farfan and picked his spot to the right of Benaglio. The Wolves had to respond and they did, with Patrick Helmes finding the back of the net in the 86th minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Their late rally did not produce an equaliser and Magath left his bench with his head down at the final whistle to escape from his former club's celebrations as they moved to within six points of the top five.
