Fallen giants River Plate continued their solid start to the Clausura campaign with a 2-1 win over Newell's Old Boys. The Buenos Aires side, who have struggled seriously in recent seasons, are now up to fourth after seven games following today's victory at El Monumental.
Leandro Caruso's double, with a goal in each half, made the difference. Mauricio Sperdutti had earlier equalised after Caruso's opener. Newell's had substitute Rolando Schiavi sent off from the bench for dissent with Claudio Bieler following him five minutes from time.
San Lorenzo went second with a 1-0 win away to fellow strong starters Olimpo. Indeed, they overtook tonight's opponents with the win, which came courtesy of Juan Salgueiro's 73rd-minute strike and despite Jonathan Bottinelli being sent off a minute later.
Rodrigo Battaglia and Javier Campora both scored early on as Huracan beat Gimnasia La Plata 2-0. Lanus beat Racing Club 4-1 at home. They had trailed 1-0 at the break but bit back spectacularly with four second-half goals turning the game emphatically.
