Estudiantes got off to a winning start in the Argentinian Torneo Apertura with a 2-1 victory over Newell's Old Boys.

Gaston Fernandez got them off to a dream start in the 13th minute, with Gabriel Mercado adding a second ten minutes later. Juan Cobelli pulled one back for Old Boys in the last minute.

Independiente and Velez Sarsfield drew 2-2 in the day's other game. Facundo Parra and Roberto Battion gave Inde a dream start, but second-half goals from Maximiliano Morales and Juan Manuel Martinez got Velez level.
