Sampdoria have signed striker Massimo Maccarone from Palermo, the club confirmed today.

The former Middlesbrough player only joined the Sicilian club on a three-year deal last summer, but has been given limited playing time at Palermo. The 31-year-old will be unveiled to the media tomorrow.

The player will begin training tomorrow with the squad.

A statement from Sampdoria read: "Sampdoria announces they have signed Massimo Maccarone on a permanent transfer from Palermo. The player will begin training tomorrow with the squad."

Maccarone becomes Samp's fourth reinforcement in the winter transfer market following the arrivals of on-loan Manchester United forward Federico Macheda, former Barcelona forward Mauro Icardi and ex-Debrecen defender Zsolt Laczko.

Maccarone has scored twice in 18 league appearances for Palermo this term.
