Goals from Hirofumi Moriyasu and Bruno Cazarine lifted Sydney FC off the bottom of the A-League in a 2-1 win at Newcastle Jets.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play in the 35th minute when Scott Jamieson's corner was met by Moriyasu, who volleyed the ball through a crowded penalty area and into the net.

Sydney doubled their lead right on half-time when a poor backpass by Kasey Wehrman put Dimitri Petratos through on goal. Jets goalkeeper Ben Kennedy managed to kick the ball away but only as far as Cazarine, who slotted home into an empty net.

Newcastle pulled a goal back through Labinot Haliti in the 65th minute but despite dominating the final 25 minutes they could not force an equaliser.

The victory sees Sydney move up to ninth, one place and four points behind the Jets, keeping alive their bid to make the A-League finals.

In the other match, Gold Coast United and Perth Glory shared a goalless draw, a result that keeps the former in fourth but drops the visitors to second bottom.
