Montpellier's Jourdren denies Lorient win
Montpellier missed the opportunity to move up to fifth in Ligue 1 when they were held to a goalless draw at Lorient. The visitors survived the last 15 minutes with ten men after Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was sent off to hold on for a point.
Lorient came close to claiming all three points when Kevin Gameiro hit the post shortly before half-time and Montpellier were indebted to goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren who repelled Lorient in the second half. There were few clear-cut chances in the opening stages and it took until midway through the first half for a serious threat to goal, Morgan Amalfitano shooting narrowly wide for Lorient.
Hasan Kabze then tried his luck for Montpellier, sending in a powerful shot on target which Fabien Audard needed two attempts to block. The hosts were again grateful to Audard shortly after the break when Souleymane Camara went down the left before cutting and shooting from the left which the keeper repelled.
Lorient then came closest to breaking the deadlock when Amalfitano released Gameiro, the striker beat both Emir Spahic and Mbiwa and released a curling right-footed shot which beat Jourdren but came back off the left post.
It was all Lorient from there on in and the visitors were indebted to Jourdren. Alaixys Romao's header was thwarted by Jourdren after he connected with Arnold Mvuemba's free-kick, the keeper then punched away Sigamary Diarra's long-range free-kick and then blocked Amalfitano's shot as the hosts searched for an opening. Montpellier's task was then made harder when Mbiwa was sent off for a second yellow card after fouling Gameiro.
