With Inter's match against Cesena scheduled for 19 January since the Nerazzurri are involved in the FIFA Club World Cup™ in the United Arab Emirates, Sampdoria, Palermo and Roma have a chance to overtake them in the table.
All four teams have taken 23 points from 15 games. Samp visit Brescia, who hold the last position of safety, while Palermo take on Parma at La Favorita. Roma, meanwhile, face rock-bottom Bari in the Eternal City. Claudio Ranieri's team had a tough start to the season but have turned things around in Serie A and also reached the knockout round of the UEFA Champions League after a 1-1 draw at Cluj in midweek.
Lazio will travel to Turin on Sunday looking to claim another famous scalp when they take on Juventus. The Romans, without the distraction of European football, have had a great season. They defeated defending champions Inter Milan 3-0 in the last round to remain second in the standings, three points behind AC Milan and three clear of Sunday's rivals.
"This game will show whether we can or cannot challenge AC Milan," said Lazio president Claudio Lotito. "We will be playing a great side and so it will be very difficult for us."
Juventus are unbeaten in 11 league games but have been less fortunate in Europe, failing to progress in the UEFA Europa League. Milan, meanwhile, visit in-form Bologna on Saturday. Massimiliano Allegri's Milan will be bolstered by the return of top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was rested in Wednesday's 2-0 defeat to Ajax in the UEFA Champions League.
Bologna, who remain unbeaten at the Stadio Renato Dall' Ara this season, go into Saturday's match on the back of two straight wins. A draw in Turin between Lazio and Juventus would see Napoli leapfrog Juventus in the standings, provided the Naples-based club win at Genoa this weekend. Napoli are fourth, level on 27 points with Juventus.
Fiorentina have not won on the road this season with just three points collected away from home all season. They travel to the Stadio Friuli to face Udinese. The Viola are one point behind Udinese in the standings.
Strugglers Lecce take on mid-table Chievo at the Stadio Via del Mare. Lecce have lost their last four league games and are second-bottom in the standings.
Sardinian outfit Cagliari host Sicilians Catania. Catania have mustered just three points of a possible 21 away from home this campaign.
