Hosts Wolfsburg were held to a goalles draw by Werder Bremen in a match that saw both sides' captains miss from the penalty spot. Bremen's Torsten Frings had his spot-kick stopped in the 74th minute, before Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko sent his attempt over the crossbar three minutes later.
Diego had the first chance for Wolfsburg after eight minutes but Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese fended away the former Bremen playmaker's free kick. Wiese was again impressive in the 19th minute, stopping Diego after a fine pass from Peter Pekarik.
Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio showed off his skills with two fine stops around the half hour mark, stopping Marko Arnautovic from a tight angle in the 29th minute and denying Marko Marin from the right side two minutes later. The home side were nearly gifted the lead just after the hour mark but Per Mertesacker's attempted clearance was poked just wide of the goal.
Bremen were awarded a penalty in the 74th minute after Josue took down Philipp Bargfrede in the box. Frings' spot-kick was diverted by Benaglio on to the crossbar and out - his second missed penalty after 19 successive conversions. And referee Deniz Aytekin was pointing to the spot three minutes later at the other end, when Sebastian Prodl brought down Mario Mandzukic. However, Dzeko wasted the opportunity when he shot over.
Benaglio again showed his class with seven minutes to play as he stopped Arnautovic one-on-one, before home defender Andrea Barzagli cleared a shot by Aaron Hunt in the final minute. Wolfsburg captain Dzeko was replaced with two minutes to play for Ashkan Dejagah.
The result means Bremen, who have not scored an away goal in three matches, are tenth in the table with 19 points - two points and three places off than Wolfsburg.
