Dinei gave the home side an early lead, but Carlinhos and Tarta scored second-half goals to keep Fluminense a point clear of Corinthians. Corinthians did their best to keep the pressure on with a 2-0 win over Vasco da Gama, with Bruno Cesar and Danilo on target, while Vasco had Ze Roberto sent off in the second half.
Gremio won 3-0 at Guarani, with Andre Lima, Jonas Oliveira (penalty) and Jose Clementino getting the goals, while Atletico Goianiense drew 1-1 at home to Sao Paulo. Rogerio Ceni put the visitors ahead from the spot after 54 minutes but Elias earned the home side a point ten minutes later.
Atletico Mineiro impressed as they beat Goias 3-1, with Diego Souza, Oliveira and Diego Tardelli netting, with Everton Santos having briefly equalised.
A hat-trick from Antonio Caio gave mid-table Avai a fine 3-2 win over Santos. Keirrison and Neymar put visitors Santos into what looked a comfortable lead, but goals in the 40th, 45th and 81st minutes from Caio swung the balance in the home side's favour.
Bottom side Gremio Prudente were beaten 3-1 at Botafogo, with Marcelo Cordeiro's 90th-minute penalty putting the cap on the win after Antonio Carlos and Edno had also scored.
Ceara drew 1-1 with Atletico Paranaense despite having Diego Sacoman sent off a minute into the second half, while Cruzeiro were impressive as they won 2-1 at Flamengo, with Roger and Thiago Ribeiro wiping out Mauricio's opener.
In the day's other game, Vitoria drew 1-1 at Internacional, with Rafael Sobis earning the home side a point after Adailton's opener.
