Wolfsburg coach Steve McClaren admits his side's poor league position is not purely down to misfortune and that they are now going to struggle to reach his goal for the midway stage of the season.

The Wolves have already thrown away points twice when leading games 3-0 this season, leaving the Englishman to make a brutally honest appraisal of the season so far.

"This is the reality," he said. "We are where we are because we deserve to be there. We still have a lot to do and we continue to make too many errors."

The Wolves currently lie 11th in the table, six points behind the top six but just four points above the bottom three with 15 points.

McClaren recently declared that his side needed 25 points come the turn of the year, and with four games still to go before the winter break, they can no longer afford to slip up.

"It is now going to be difficult for us to reach the mark of 25 points," he admitted in the Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.

"But it is still only November. If we win three games in a row, then we can still move up to sixth. Things can still change quickly."
