In today's other game, PSV Eindhoven overcame a spirited display from Excelsior to come out on top in a six-goal spectacle and move top of the table. Jeremain Lens, Wilfred Bouma, Ola Toivonen and Marcelo were on the scoresheet for the home side, who also hit the woodwork twice in the second half. Excelsior, though, belied their lowly position in the Eredivisie table to find the target through Daan Bovenberg and Guyon Fernandez and produce a performance they can be proud of against the Dutch giants.
It was the visitors who took the lead after just five minutes to silence the majority of the Eindhoven crowd. Ryan Koolwijk whipped in a free-kick which was volleyed into the top corner by Bovenberg. But PSV got themselves back on level terms after 19 minutes thanks to Lens, who latched onto a cross from Balazs Dzudzsak and darted past two defenders before sweeping the ball in from ten yards. Lens then turned provider for PSV's second goal after 34 minutes, flicking the ball on for Bouma to head home from close range.
The hosts made it 3-1 five minutes after the interval when Ibrahim Afellay swung in a corner for Toivonen to provide the finish with a six-yard header. Excelsior rose to the challenge and pulled a goal back after 70 minutes with a superb solo effort from Fernandez, who took the ball from his own half into the PSV box before slipping a right-footed shot under goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson. Things looked to be turning against PSV when Marcus Berg saw two close-range strikes hit the crossbar within the space of three minutes. But they eventually put the match to bed after 78 minutes as Toivonen's cross was smashed into the top corner by Marcelo.
