Kaiserslautern came back from a three-goal deficit in the second half with three goals in 20 minutes to snatch a 3-3 draw at home to Stuttgart.
Stuttgart stormed into a 3-0 lead with goals from Arthur Boka and Cacau both on the scoresheet in the first half and Christian Gentner netted five minutes after the restart. But Ilijan Micanski pulled a goal back in eight minutes later before Ivo Ilicevic and Mathias Abel struck twice in two minutes to give the home side an important point.
Neither team created many chances in the early going until Stuttgart took the lead after 19 minutes. Boka and Ciprian Marica played a one-two and the Ivorian looped a left-footed shot over onrushing goalkeeper Tobias Sippel from the edge of the area.
Kaiserslautern claimed for a penalty in the 32nd minute as Christian Tiffert appeared to be brought down, but referee Babak Rafati waved play on and Stuttgart raced down the other end and Cacau beat Sippel to compound the home side's misery and make it 2-0. The hosts came close to pulling a goal back a minute before the break with Jan Moravek feeding a wonderful through ball to Srdjan Lakic, whose shot went just wide of the far right post.
Stuttgart increased their lead in the 50th minute from the penalty spot after captain Martin Amedick brought down Marica in the area. Gentner stepped up to take the penalty and buried it into the bottom corner with Sippel going the other way.
Kaiserslautern pulled a goal back in the 58th minute with Micanski striking home Tiffert's lift-sided cross. And it was 3-2 with 14 minutes remaining after a superb blast by Ilicevic, who hammered a 24-yard left-footer into the upper right corner.
The home side then completed a remarkable comeback just two minutes later with Abel's header going in off the post. Marica nearly gave Stuttgart the victory but sent his header wide in the 88th minute.
