PSV's success was their third in a row in Group I and moved them three points clear of second-placed Metalist Kharkiv, who drew 0-0 at Sampdoria. Defeat for Debrecen, who have now conceded 11 goals in four games, means they cannot reach the knockout phase with two games remaining.

Debrecen threatened for the first time after 37 minutes when Peter Czvitkovics missed right from 12 yards. It was a fleeting moment of worry for PSV, who almost immediately went down the other end to score, only for Toivonen's shot from inside the area to crash off the frame of the goal.
