Sporting Lisbon moved up to third place in the Portuguese Liga with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Uniao Leiria. Jaime Valdes' 14th-minute strike put Sporting ahead while his second goal after 40 minutes cancelled out Carlao's equaliser midway through the half.

Bottom side Naval slipped to a 3-1 loss at Beira Mar. The hosts were two goals to the good at the break thanks to Moreira Artur's 22nd-minute penalty and Leandro Tatu's 39th-minute effort. Edvaldo Bolivia pulled one back for Naval after an hour but Wilson Eduardo added a third for Beira Mar in stoppage time, just moments after they were reduced to 10 men when Antonio Kanu picked up a second booking.

Nacional defeated Vitoria Setubal 1-0, Orlando Sa with the only goal after 24 minutes, while Olhanense were held to a 1-1 draw by nine-man Maritimo. Pinheiro Kleber fired Maritimo into a seventh-minute lead but the dismissal of defender Alonso after 32 minutes left the visitors on the ropes. Olhanense finally forced an equaliser 10 minutes from time through Jean-Paul Yontcha before Maritimo also lost Papa Baba Diawara to a red card in stoppage time.

In Saturday's Portuguese Liga action, Porto opened up a seven-point lead at the summit with a 1-0 victory at Academica. Silvestre Varela scored the only goal three minutes before the interval to maintain Porto's unbeaten start to the season. Meanwhile, Rio Ave claimed their first win of the campaign with a 2-0 success at home to fourth-placed Braga. The 28th-minute dismissal of defender Moises Pinheiro proved Braga's downfall as they conceded second-half goals from Manuel Ze Gomes and Joao Tomas. The win saw Rio Ave climb off the foot of the table at the expense of Naval.
