Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt fears he may have torn ankle ligaments playing for the Netherlands on Tuesday.

Kuyt was forced off just before the hour mark in Oranje's 4-1 UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying win over Sweden in Amsterdam after landing awkwardly when jumping for a ball with Sweden's Daniel Majstorovic.

And although he is still awaiting test results, he is not optimistic.

He told sport-promotion.nl: "The swelling is so bad that we will only know with any certainty in a few days. But I fear the worst. You know your own body and it does not feel good.

"The doctors have the same feeling, that it's probably torn ankle ligaments. Let's hope they and I are wrong."

Kuyt wanted to play on after suffering the injury but was not allowed to do so by team doctors.

He added: "I was so eager to get on after receiving treatment. It was nice that we were doing do well and closing in on victory.

"But the doctor said no. And when I tried to move the ankle almost collapsed so he was right to keep me on the sidelines."
