Uruguayan side Defensor Sporting took the initiative in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana last 16 by defeating Argentinian giants Independiente 1-0 in Montevideo.

An own goal by Independiente playmaker Leandro Gracian 20 minutes into the second half gave Pablo Repetto's side an advantage ahead of the return match on 19 October.

It was an even game in the first half but Defensor managed to find an edge in the second period and moved up a gear after going in front. Importantly, Defensor also managed to avoid giving Independiente an away goal.

Defensor midfielder Miguel Amado said: "It was important for us not to give away goals. We took the lead in the tie and that's the key point.

"We knew Independiente would attack us after we scored, but we were well organised. It was a tough match. They wanted a draw, but we won."
