Mighty Mainz win at Werder
Marcel Risse and Andre Schurrle scored within eight minutes in the second half to give Mainz victory at Werder Bremen and top spot in the Bundesliga.
Risse struck in the 53rd minute and substitute Schurrle doubled the lead in the 61st minute as Mainz collected their fourth win in four matches for a perfect 12 points. The win put Mainz top of the table for the first time in club history. Bremen remained on four points for 10th place.
Neither team created many chances in the early going and Bremen were lucky Mainz were not awarded a penalty in the 29th minute as Petri Pasanen felled Lewis Holtby in the area. The rest of the first half lacked any real highlights.
But the visitors came out of the changing room in fine form and had a great chance four minutes after the restart. Marco Caligiuri crossed from the right side to Risse, whose shot went wide.
But Risse gave Mainz the lead in the 53rd minute with Miroslav Karhan lobbing a pass over the Bremen backline and Risse blasting home from a tight angle on the right side.
Mainz doubled the lead just eight minutes later with a superb counter attack. Holtby passed forward to Risse, who one-timed it on to Schurrle for an easy slot home for a 2-0 advantage.
Tim Wiese made a strong save to against Holtby in the 68th minute before Bremen striker Hugo Almeida appeared to have scored a minute later but was ruled offside. Werder substitute Sandro Wagner headed Marko Marin's free-kick off the crossbar with 12 minutes to play and Bremen were beaten for good.
