Werder Bremen have been drawn against Bayern Munich in the second round of the DFB-Pokal which is a "shame for German football", according to their director of sport Klaus Allofs.
Last year's finalists were pitted together in a tie which will take place at the Allianz Arena in October and will mean that one of the competition's heavyweights will not even make the third round this year.
"It is a shame for German football that last season's final takes place already in the second round," said Allofs, who learnt of the draw shortly after landing in Bremen after witnessing his side's 4-1 defeat at Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.
"But that's the way things are in the cup. In 2009, we had to play all of our games away from home and against tough opponents so why should we not succeed again?"
Two other Bundesliga sides are guaranteed to fall by the wayside with Borussia Monchengladbach drawing Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt being given Hamburg.
The lowest-ranked team in the competition, Victoria Hamburg, will play host to 2009 Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg while Stuttgart and Nurnberg also have tricky trips to fourth-division sides.
Stuttgart face Chemnitz, the side who accounted for St Pauli in the first round, while Nurnberg head to Elversberg, who defeated Hannover on a penalty shoot-out.
Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund travel to Offenbach, Schalke are away at FSV Frankfurt and Mainz face second-division opponents Alemannia Aachen.
The ties will be played on 26-27 October.
