Melbourne Heart picked up their first-ever A-League point today following a 1-1 draw with Newcastle Jets at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

The Heart's opening game of the season had ended in a 1-0 defeat at home to Central Coast Mariners and they again fell behind against Newcastle when Jeremy Brockie despatched a low left-foot strike under the arm of goalkeeper Clint Bolton on the hour mark.

But the visitors levelled with 11 minutes remaining when Ben Kantarovski compounded to send an attempted clearance into the back of his own net.

Elsewhere, the points were also shared at Westpac Stadium as Wellington Phoenix drew 3-3 with Gold Coast United.

Paul Ifill had opened the scoring for the hosts after six minutes, turning home a Leo Bertos cross.

Gold Coast had to wait until the 36th minute before equalising when New Zealand international Shane Smeltz headed home but Phoenix quickly regained their lead through Chris Greenacre.

The former Tranmere forward added another ten minutes into the second half when he volleyed home from close range.

But Phoenix clawed their way back as first Smeltz reduced the deficit in the 74th minute before Jason Culina equalised with three minutes remaining.
