Gold Coast United were held to a goalless draw by Brisbane Roar in their A-League opener at Skilled Park today.
The visitors had started the better but United weathered the early pressure and finished the game strongly, although were unable to find the winning goal.
Roar came close in the first half when Thomas Broich was denied by an acrobatic save from debutant Glen Moss, while Michael Theoklitos did well to twice prevent Gold Coast taking the lead in the second period with a full-stretch save from Zenon Caravella's volley, before tipping over a Joel Porter header.
"We didn't play well today but on the positive side we didn't concede a goal and we didn't lose the game," said Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg. "We had a few opportunities as well so in the end it was probably a fair result."
Brisbane Roar coach Ange Postecoglou was delighted to make an unbeaten start to the season. "I was really pleased with the way the guys went about it for the whole game," he said. "Hopefully this gives the players a little bit of extra belief now because they've worked really hard."
