Fluminense took full advantage of Corinthians' costly slip on Thursday to move to the top of the Brazilian Campeonato standings with a narrow 1-0 win over Cruzeiro.

Just 24 hours after bottom side Atletico Goianiense stunned Corinthians with an unexpected 3-1 win, Fluminense heaped more misery on the erstwhile league leaders as Leandro Euzebio's 53rd-minute strike secured them all three points. The victory moves Fluminense onto 22 points, one clear of Corinthians after 10 games.

Third-placed Ceara missed the chance to pull level on points with Corinthians as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Guarani. Ernandes fired Ceara ahead after 53 minutes before Ricardo Chavier equalised for the hosts 16 minutes from time.

Palmeiras and Botafogo played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in an encounter that saw both sides finish with 10 men. Goals from Marcos Assuncao (46) and Kleber (57) appeared to have Palmeiras on course for the three points but Botafogo rallied to pull level through Jobson (69) and Antonio Carlos (78). Assuncao and Jobson were both dismissed in injury time as tempers spilled over.
