Belletti joins Chelsea exodus
Brazilian fullback Juliano Belletti will join Joe Cole and Michael Ballack in leaving Chelsea this summer, the club has confirmed.
The Premier League champions confirmed the departures of Cole and Ballack earlier after the parties failed to reach agreement on new contracts and this afternoon it was announced Belletti would join them. The 33-year-old was signed by former boss Jose Mourinho in August 2007 and leaves after completing his three-year contract.
Belletti joined Chelsea from Barcelona, for whom he scored the winning goal in their 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final of 2006. Mourinho left only a matter of weeks after Belletti's arrival but the Brazilian FIFA World Cup-winner established himself as the first-choice right-back.
The signing of Jose Bosingwa in the summer of 2008 saw his chances severely restricted, though, and when he was used it was often as a midfielder. Injury to Bosingwa meant an opening for Belletti this season but he made only 13 starts and leaves the club having played 94 games, scoring five goals.
