Salzburg clinch back-to-back titles
Red Bull Salzburg clinched a second successive Austrian Bundesliga title with a 2-0 victory at Sturm Graz today.
Second-placed Austria Vienna also triumphed on the final day of the season, beating SV Ried 2-0, but were aware their title hopes were slim at half-time in their contest.
Salzburg bounced back from two straight losses to open up a 2-0 lead after 16 minutes at Sturm Graz, with Simon Cziommer and Roman Wallner scoring within three first-half minutes. The visitors then saw out their 22nd win of the campaign to secure the title, while Sturm Graz finished fourth.
Austria Vienna secured their 23rd win of the season at home to SV Ried, but their seven defeats proved costly as they fell a point short of Salzburg. Tomas Jun scored twice, netting after 55 and 82 minutes.
Rapid Vienna were also in contention for the title at the start of the day but were relying on results going against their rivals. Hamdi Salihi scored a hat-trick in Rapid's 3-1 win at SV Mattersburg as they finished third. Salihi netted after 17, 68 and 81 minutes, while SV Mattersburg's strike came from Dominik Doleschal after 53 minutes.
At the foot of the table, already-relegated Austria Karnten bowed out of the Bundesliga with a 2-2 draw at home to FC Magna Wr. Neustadt.
Patrick Niklas put FC Magna Wr. Neustadt in front after three minutes, but goals from Stefan Hierlander (77) and Oliver Pusztai (83) put the hosts on course for just a third win of the campaign. However, the visitors responded despite the dismissal of Michael Stanislaw for two bookable offences, with Christian Ramsebner netting an 89th-minute leveller.
Elsewhere, SV Kapfenberg, who finished one place off the foot of the table, secured a final day 2-0 win over LASK Linz with goals from Srdjan Pavlov and Michael Tieber.
