Van Gaal: Robben is incredible
Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal thanked Arjen Robben for booking his side's place in the semi-final of the DFB-Pokal.
The Netherlands winger provided the highlight of a keenly-contested semi-final at Schalke last night with his goal midway through the second half of extra time taking Bayern into the 15 May final, where they will meet holders Werder Bremen.
And Van Gaal paid tribute to Robben's moment of brilliance which spared his team the prospect of a penalty shoot-out at the Arena AufSchalke. "Robben is incredible," he said. "To score such a goal at such a time is top class."
Van Gaal was also happy with his side's performance against their closest rivals in the Bundesliga. The two teams meet again in the league in just over a week in a match which could determine who will be crowned German champions this season, and Van Gaal can therefore look ahead confidently to his side's prospects of completing a domestic double this term.
"We were superior," he said. "We dominated not only with our vitality, but also our technical skill. It was a fantastic performance. I am very proud of my players."
Schalke coach Felix Magath did not quite see it in the same way and he too took strength from his side's performance, which he believes augurs well for their own title challenge. "We were on the same level as Bayern," he said. "We had chances to score a goal, but we did not take them."
