CSKA and Dynamo shared the points after the Moscow derby on the second day of the Russian Premier League season finished goalless on Sunday.
The two capital clubs join three other clubs who share the lead in the table with four points after two matches. The rivals fought out a lively draw at the Khimki Stadium under the watchful gaze of Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho, who was checking up on CSKA prior to the UEFA Champions League quarter-final between the sides.
Meanwhile, Zenit St Petersburg narrowly escaped a home defeat after drawing 1-1 at home to Russia's nine-time champions Spartak Moscow. "We performed classy football today," Zenit manager Luciano Spalletti said. "It's a pity we failed to win but I was really pleased with my men's performance, especially in the second half."
The visitors got off to a lively start, taking the lead in the 12th minute through Brazilian marksman Velliton, who converted a six-yard header after an error by Zenit goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeyev. Velliton's team-mate and countryman Ibson had a sight of goal in the 19th minute after another Malafeyev mistake but his shot form the edge of the six-yard box hit the woodwork and went wide.
The hosts replied positively, pinning Spartak back and testing their defence, but the Muscovites defended well. After the break the hosts stepped up a gear and created a number of clear scoring chances but away keeper Soslan Dzhanayev preserved his side's lead with a string of eye-catching stops.
But in the 88th minute he was unable to prevent an equaliser from Zenit's Belgian defender Nicolas Lombaerts, whose close-range header from Alessandro Rosina's well-struck free-kick salvaged a draw. "Today we looked better than a week ago against Dynamo. But only in the opening 25 minutes," Spartak coach Balery Karpin said. "Unfortunately we failed to keep our lead throughout and allowed the hosts to level at the very end of the match."
Reigning champions Rubin Kazan will complete the schedule of the second matchday with an away match against Tomsk on Monday.
