Independiente jumped to the top of the Argentinian Clausura table after a 2-0 home win over River Plate on Sunday.
Dario Gandin put Independiente ahead in the 38th minute and Nestor Silvera doubled the lead on the hour mark, lifting Independiente above previous leaders Godoy Cruz who lost for the first time in the campaign.
Godoy Cruz tripped up 2-1 away to Newell's Old Boys, in a match which saw both teams have a player sent off. First to go was the home side's Rolando Schiavi in the 31st minute, and Jairo Castillo put Godoy Cruz 1-0 ahead a minute later.
But the teams were equal in number after 35 minutes when Godoy Cruz had Nicolas Olmedo dismissed, and four minutes later Newell's Old Boys drew level when Joaquin Boghossian converted a penalty. Boghossian then netted his second goal of the game four minutes after half-time and it proved to be the match-winner.
An own goal from Marco Torsiglieri gave Argentinos Juniors a 1-0 victory over Velez Sarsfield, while Huracan suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Tigre, with Claudio Perez getting a 66th-minute winner.
The day's other match saw Apertura champions Banfield held 0-0 away to Atletico Tucuman, who moved one point away from the bottom of the table. Banfield stand third after the eighth round of Clausura matches.
