Peruvians stun champs Estudiantes
Estudiantes' hopes of retaining their Copa Libertadores title suffered a big blow with a 4-1 defeat to Alianza Lima in their second Group 3 match.
All seemed to be going according to plan for the Argentinian outfit when Jose Sosa opened the scoring after only eight seconds, the midfielder capitalising on an error in the Peruvian side's defence to notch the fastest goal in the competition's history.
But the hosts responded well and turned the game on its head with goals after 18 and 33 minutes from Wilmer Aguirre. Estudiantes tried to hit back after the interval but failed to create any clear-cut chances and Aguirre reminded them how it was done 16 minutes from time by completing his hat-trick.
Aguirre then turned provider for Jose Fernandez to seal an emphatic win nine minutes later. The victory marked the second triumph in as many games for Alianza following their 3-1 win over Bolivar in Bolivia.
Meanwhile, in the Group 8 opener, Universidad de Chile overcame Venezuela's Caracas 1-0. Juan Olivera scored the game's only goal from the penalty spot after just two minutes. The Chilean team held on to pick up the points, but coach Gerardo Pelusso was far from happy with his side's display.
"On the football side, I guess we played our worst game in the year," he said. "We defended too close to our goal against a team who played well."
