Cruzeiro canter into group stage
Brazilian giants Cruzeiro hammered nine-man Real Potosi 7-0 to make it into the Copa Libertadores group stage. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Bolivia last week, the Belo Horizonte team showed no mercy at the Mineirao and scored four goals in the first half.
Wellington Paulista fired past both goalkeeper Mauro Machado and defender Alvaro Ricaldi to open the scoring in the 28th minute and then set up Thiago Ribeiro to widen the gap two minutes later. Kleber made it 3-0 in the 39th after being found by Jonathan, who added the fourth in first-half injury time.
Real Potosi forward Gerardo Yecerotte was sent off for fouling Kleber at the start of the second half and midfielder Gonzalo Galindo followed after a second yellow card in the 74th minute. Eliandro, Bernardo and Ecuadorian midfielder Joffre Guerron added further goals in the final four minutes of the game to send Cruzeiro into Group 7, where they will meet Velez Sarsfield of Argentina, Chilean giants Colo Colo and Venezuela's Deportivo Italia.
Kleber is confident Cruzeiro can succeed in the following round and said: "It is a very difficult group, quite hard, but we are a hard team to beat and we deservedly reached the finals last year. I think the team will play good football this year. We must do our best to finish the next round on top in our group, as only the six best runners-up progress to the following stage."
Peruvian side Juan Aurich made history as they beat Mexico's Estudiantes Tecos 2-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate - despite being reduced to 10 men - to progress to the group stage. Luis Fernando Suarez's team became the first Peruvian side to win a Copa Libertadores match in Mexico thanks to a 43rd-minute header by Luis Tejada and a 73rd-minute strike from Ricardo Ciciliano.
Juan Aurich defender Willy Alexander Rivas was sent off in the 65th minute and Fredy Bareiro reduced the deficit eleven minutes later, but the visitors celebrated reaching the group stage for only the second time, their previous appearance coming in 1969. They will play national rivals Alianza Lima, the reigning Libertadores champions Estudiantes of Argentina and Bolivia's Bolivar in Group Three.
