Bosnia and Herzegovina captain Emir Spahic has extended his contract at Montpellier until 2014, the Ligue 1 club have confirmed.

Spahic joined the newly-promoted team at the beginning of the season, scoring a stoppage-time equaliser on his debut against Paris St Germain.

The 29-year-old left-back has been a revelation in Montpellier's back four and, with his contract set to expire in June, the club moved swiftly to tie him to the Stade de la Mosson for another four years.

Spahic has played a key part in Montpellier's astonishing season which sees Rene Girard's men currently second in Ligue 1, behind only reigning champions Bordeaux.
