CSKA Moscow booked their place in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League after posting a last-gasp win against Besiktas in their final Group B outing.
With Manchester United defeating Wolfsburg 3-1 in the other Group B fixture, a point would have been enough for the Russians to progress, but as it was goals from Milos Krasic and Eugeni Aldonin ensured Leonid Slutsky's troops went through as clear runners-up. Besiktas bossed much of the match but failed to capitalise on their possession, Bobo's late strike all they had to show for their efforts as they ended the group stage bottom of the pile with four points.
Ibrahim Uzulmez carved out the first chance of the evening for the hosts after eight minutes when he fired in a drilled effort from long range which sailed wide of the target. Besiktas spurned a better chance to go ahead three minutes later when Rodrigo Tello found himself clean through but contrived to chip the ball wide of the advancing goalkeeper when he took aim from outside the area.
The Turkish side continued to press and Igor Akinfeev had to be alert to stop Fabian Ernst's effort from outside the area after 17 minutes. CSKA's only chance of the opening 30 minutes fell to Tomas Necid but the striker blazed over from close range.
Profligate hosts
Bobo might have done better for Besiktas than attempt a header on goal from a tight angle after 31 minutes when a nod back might have been the better option, and the hosts' wastefulness soon came back to haunt them. Forty-one minutes were on the clock when the visitors made the breakthrough, Deividas Semberas the architect with a surging from his own half which ended when he laid the ball off to Krasic, who strode into the Besiktas area and opened the scoring with a supremely confident curling effort into the top-right corner.
There was a lengthy delay at the start of the second period as Besiktas goalkeeper Rustu Recber received treatment for what looked like a broken nose after he played himself into trouble inside his own area and received an accidental kick in the face from Elvir Rahimic as he tried to recover. The former Turkey international looked in a great deal of pain but gamely battled on after being patched up by medical staff.
Besiktas continued to do much of the running and Bobo headed over midway through the second period as the Turks battled to restore parity. Substitute Ugur Inceman was next to chance his arm from the edge of the area with 11 minutes remaining but he fired into the ground and the ball bobbled into the arms of the waiting Akinfeev.
Akinfeev had to work much harder to keep CSKA's lead intact minutes later when substitute Nihat fired in a low effort which the goalkeeper did well to parry clear. But Besiktas' efforts were finally rewarded four minutes from time when Bobo connected with Uzulmez's left-wing cross with a crisp volley past the CSKA stopper.
Nihat went close with a volley in stoppage time as the hosts threatened to take all the points but CSKA wrapped up when Necid flicked the ball on from a throw in for Aldonin to fire home from a tight angle.
