FC Twente saw off Ajax 1-0 to maintain their place at the top of the Eredivisie. Bryan Ruiz scored the only goal of the game two minutes after the restart to keep Twente two points clear of PSV Eindhoven.
Not the least of Twente's achievements was keeping quiet an Ajax attack that had managed 40 goals in 12 league games before this afternoon.
Ola Toivonen bagged four goals for PSV in a 5-1 win at ADO Den Haag, but he had to share the limelight with referee Roelof Luinge. The official dismissed two ADO players and stopped play midway through the second half when he took exception to obscene chanting from the crowd.
By that stage PSV were 4-0 up, through a hat-trick from Toivonen and Otman Bakkal's strike, while ADO had had Ricky van den Bergh and Lex Immers sent off. When play finally resumed, Karim Soltani pulled one back for the nine-man hosts, before Toivonen completed his haul.
Point for AZ
AZ Alkmaar needed a second-half equaliser from Brett Holman to earn a point against Feyenoord in a 1-1 draw. Feyenoord had taken a fifth-minute lead through Sekou Cisse.
Utrecht slumped to their first home defeat of the season as Heerenveen survived a late fightback to register a 3-2 win. The visitors cruised into a 3-0 lead, two goals from Michal Papadopoulos adding to an early strike from Viktor Elm.
Utrecht hit back late on, but efforts from Tim Cornelisse and Jacob Mulenga did not pave the way for a dramatic equaliser with Heerenveen clinging on to a win that moves them clear of the relegation zone.
In the day's early game, Breda beat Willem II 4-0 with first-half goals from Kurt Elshot, Kees Kwakman, Matthew Amoah and Leonardo.
