Jeonbuk Motors finish top
Jeonbuk Motors clinched first place in the K-League on the last day of the regular season by defeating Gyeongnam 4-2, while Asian Champions League finalists Pohang Steelers finished second to secure their place in next year's edition of the continental tournament. The three points mean Jeonbuk progress to the final of the championship play-off series, which the top six teams of the league contest.
The hosts were three goals to the good by the break against an in-form Gyeongnam team. Choi Tae-wook put the leaders ahead after 13 minutes, getting the final touch on a Luis shot that was heading wide. Former Middlesbrough striker Lee Dong-gook doubled Jeonbuk's advantage after 34 minutes when he smartly half-volleyed a low cross past former international team-mate Kim Byung-ji.
Three minutes before the break Lee fired home from the edge of the box to finish a swift counter-attack in deadly fashion and record his 20th goal of the season. Two second-half goals from Kim Dong-chan put Gyeongnam back in the game until Brasilia sealed the win ten minutes from time.
"It was a tough game in which both teams tried to win," said Jeonbuk coach Choi kang-hee. "I am very happy and grateful to the players and the fans. We made a couple of mistakes in the second half and let them back into the game, but we got the win.
"It doesn't matter who you play in the play-offs, it is going to be a good team and anyone can win."
Seoul slipped to third after a 1-1 draw at home to Chunnam Dragons. Dejan Damjanovic scored the first goal with a spectacular 25-yard shot, but the Montenegrin marksman was then sent off for his celebration.
Chunnam equalised with a minute remaining to dump Seoul out of the top two, as substitute striker Jong Yoon-song scored from close range. Chunnam finish sixth to garner the last play-off position.
Pohang Steelers warmed up for the Asian Champions League final against Al Ittihad in Tokyo on 7 November with a 1-0 win over Suwon Bluewings to finish in second.
Seongnam Ilhwa are in fourth following a 3-0 win at home to Daegu. Incheon United booked their play-off spot with a 1-0 win at Busan I'Park. Elsewhere, Jeju United drew 0-0 with Gangwon while Daejeon Citizen defeated Gwangju Sangmu 3-1.
