Goals from Michael Bridges and Labinot Haliti saw Newcastle Jets come out on top in the derby clash with Central Coast Mariners as the hosts sealed a 2-1 win at the EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Bridges broke the deadlock after just eight minutes. Tarek Elrich surged down the right and fed Haliti, who produced a neat backheel to allow the former Leeds striker to beat goalkeeper Danny Vukovic with a left-footed effort that found the corner of the net.

Jets doubled their advantage six minutes later when Fabio Vignaroli's free-kick found its way through a crowded box to Haliti and he poked home at the back post.

Mariners pulled a goal back in the 19th minute when Adam Kwasnik beat Elrich to Nicky Tarvis' cross and volleyed home from six yards.

Central Coast enjoyed the better of the chances in the second half but were unable to take advantage of their superiority as Jets held firm to collect three points.
