Former Italy international Christian Vieri has announced his retirement from football. The 36-year-old had been without a club since agreeing to end his contract with Atalanta in April.

Vieri began his playing career with Torino, but it was at city rivals Juventus that the Bologna-born forward began to make his mark.

I don't want to play anymore and I'm not even tempted to play abroad.

"I don't want to play anymore and I'm not even tempted to play abroad," Vieri announced to the Italian media.

Vieri enjoyed a spell in La Liga with Atletico Madrid in the 1997/98 season, before returning to Serie A to play for Lazio.

He joined Inter Milan in 1999 for a world-record £32m, and went on to score 103 goals in 144 league appearances for I Nerazzurri in his six-year stint with the club.

After departing Inter in 2005 he played for AC Milan, Monaco, Fiorentina and Atalanta. For the national team, Vieri scored 23 goals in 49 appearances.

He was twice named Italy's player of the year and won the Serie A title with Juve in 1997, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup with Lazio in 1999, and the Coppa Italia with Inter six years later.
