Both Germany's Stuttgart and Romanian side Unirea Urziceni are looking to keep this season's UEFA Champions League dream alive when they meet in Bucharest on Tuesday.
A month after beating Timisoara in Romania to qualify for Europe's premier domestic competition, Stuttgart coach Markus Babbel takes his side back to the same country to face Dan Petrescu-coached Urziceni. Stuttgart drew 1-1 with Rangers in their opening Group G game and warmed up for their trip to Romania with a 3-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
"The win at Frankfurt was a step in the right direction for us we need to pick up from there on Tuesday in the Champions League," said Babbel, ahead after of the match at the Steaua Stadium here in Bucharest. Both sides failed to impress in the opening round of matches as Unirea lost 2-0 at Sevilla while Pavel Pogrebnyak's goal against Rangers was only enough to give Stuttgart a 1-1 home draw a fortnight ago.
Neither side have made a huge impact on their respective leagues with Stuttgart 11th in the Bundesliga while Urziceni are fifth in the Romanian championship.
Stuttgart's away record in Europe is not impressive. On their last UEFA Champions League campaign in the 2007/08 season, Stuttgart lost all three of their away league games in the group stages, conceding nine goals and scoring four.
Taking their three away games in last season's UEFA Cup into account - when they eventually lost to Zenit St Petersburg in the round of 32 - Stuttgart have won only one of their last seven European fixtures on foreign soil in either the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Cup proper. On Tuesday, Stuttgart's Romanian striker Ciprian Marica is set to come up against international team-mates Vasile Maftei and Iulian Apostol.
