Inaugural AFC Champions League winners Al Ain claimed their first title this season following their penalty shoot-out win against Al Ahli in the United Arab Emirates Super Cup on Wednesday.
The game finished as a 2-2 draw before Al Ain prevailed in the shoot-out. Al Ahli's Egyptian midfielder Hosny Abd Rabou missed his spot-kick to give the title to Al Ain. Al Ain took the lead in the 35th minute through their new Brazilian signing Marcio Emerson who opened the scoring when he received a long pass from Helal Saeed before beating Al Ahli goalkeeper Obaid Al Tawila with a low shot.
Al Ahli levelled the scores on 70 minutes when Brazilian striker Bare was fouled inside the area by Al Ain substitute defender Mohamad Abdulrahman and Abd Rabou made no mistake to equalise for his side. However, Emerson continued his superb form on the night as he doubled the advantage for Al Ain when Salem Abdulla sent a pass to the Brazilian midfielder who lobbed Al Tawila with four minutes left.
Al Ain's joy lasted for only four minutes as Al Ahli levelled the scores in style when substitute striker Mohamad Srour fired a powerful shot from 30 metres out which beat Al Ain goalkeeper Waleed Salem. Al Ahli had defender Mohamad Qassem sent off in the last minute of the first period of extra-time but Al Ain had to wait for the shoot-out to win the game thanks to Abd Rabou's miss.
