Asian Champions League quarter-finalists Umm Salal suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of Al Sadd in their Qatar League opener.
Last year's runners up Al Sadd opened the scoring seven minutes before the break as striker Hassan Al Haydos rounded off a swift counter-attack.
Umm Salal were reduced to ten men five minutes into the second half as defender Mohammed Mousa was sent-off and Al Sadd capitalised just two minutes later as Ali Afif crossed for Al Haydos to double Al Sadd's advantage. Al Haydos turned provider just before the hour mark as summer signing Leandro added a third.
And after Brazilian striker Leandro, who arrived from J.League side Gamba Osaka in a big money move over the closed season, sealed an impressive debut with a second with 20 minutes remaining, Dahi Al Noubi ended a disappointing day for Umm Salal as the defender turned the ball into his own net.
Elsewhere, Al Siliya scored twice in the final ten minutes to earn a 2-2 draw with Al Arabi. Al Arabi opened the scoring five minutes before the break through a free-kick from Argentinean striker Leonardo Pisculichi.
And Al Arabi doubled their advantage with 13 minutes remaining as Ali Mejbel finished off a swift counterattack. But after Brazilian Roger Galera Flores pulled a goal back for Al Siliya three minutes later, Mujib Hamed struck a last minute equaliser. Finally in a meeting of two newly promoted sides, a free-kick from Ivorian striker Thia Olivieh handed Al Ahli a 1-0 win over Al Shamal.
