Emmanuel Olisadebe scored twice as Henan Jianye moved to within a point of Chinese Super League leaders Shandong Luneng by beating bottom club Chongqing Lifan 2-0.
Former Poland international Olisadebe calmly opened the scoring after 12 minutes as he sidestepped onrushing goalkeeper He Zhengyuan before firing into the empty net. The hosts continued to dominate and Olisadebe added a second 13 minutes before the break, connecting with Jiang Kun's corner and beating He with a glancing header.
Olisadebe continued to prove a threat but was denied a hat-trick two minutes before the break when Zhou Heng made a last-gasp intervention. Henan continued to enjoy more possession in the second half, and Chongqing were unable to recover on their way to an 11th defeat in 19 games.
"It was a tough game for us, because some of the players suffered flu recently," said Henan coach Tang Yaodong. "Thanks to the players' fighting spirit, we managed to claim three points today."
Henan moved up to third place, level on points with second-placed Beijing Guoan - while Chongqing remain eight points adrift at the foot of the table. "After we conceded the second goal in the first half, I felt chances were little for us to come back," said Chongqing assistant coach Wei Xin.
"The risks of relegation are increasing if we continue the present form."
