Fluminense scraped through to the last 16 of the Copa Sudamericana on away goals after a 1-1 draw with arch rivals Flamengo at the Maracana.
After a goalless first leg last week, Renato Gaucho's Fluminense grabbed the crucial advantage thanks to a penalty from Roni during injury time at the end of the first half.
Flamengo's hopes were kept alive when Denis Marques equalised 15 minutes into the second half. However, their chances receded when defender David was sent off in the 82nd minute for grabbing Kieza's shirt.
Flamengo's Chilean midfielder Gonzalo Fierro was also shown red during injury time for fouling Alan and Fluminense celebrated their progress. Flamengo felt the absence of the goalscoring power of striker Adriano, as the former Inter Milan forward missed the second leg due to a minor injury to his right leg.
Fluminense defender Luiz Alberto told SporTV: "Flamengo ended with two men less but it was a difficult match anyway. We knew any draw would help us qualify. We eliminated our enemies. That's a big motivation to keep working hard and trust in our job."
In the next round, Fluminense will face Venezuelan side Deportivo Anzoategui or Peruvian giants Alianza Lima, who played out a goalless draw in the first leg.
In Belo Horizonte, Brazilian compatriots Atletico Mineiro and Goias drew 1-1 in the first leg of their tie. Tcho put Atletico Mineiro ahead in the 59th minute but Felipe equalised with a penalty with nine minutes remaining.
Goias' away goal could be crucial in the second leg on 16 September. Goias playmaker Pedro Iarley and Atletico forward Pedro Oldoni were both sent off, one in each half.
