Inter Milan were held to a 1-1 draw by newcomers Bari as they kicked off the defence of their Serie A title in disappointing fashion on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho's side went ahead in the 56th minute when former Barcelona star Samuel Eto'o scored on his Italian league debut from the penalty spot after Diego Milito was brought down inside the area by Leonardo Bonucci. But Bari, who had enjoyed few chances up to then, hit back with 16 minutes remaining when Vitaly Kutuzov struck an equaliser.

Juventus had a more enjoyable start to their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Chievo. Vincenzo Iaquinta scored the only goal after 11 minutes to give Juve and their new coach Ciro Ferrara some early confidence.

A late strike from Giuseppe Biava gave Genoa a 3-2 victory at home to Roma. Domenico Criscito's opener for Genoa four minutes after the interval was quickly cancelled out by strikes from Rodrigo Taddei (54) and Francesco Totti (64). But Alberto Zapater restored parity for the home side before Biava sealed the points seven minutes from time.

Tommaso Rocchi's 23rd-minute goal gave Lazio a 1-0 win against Atlanta, while Sampdoria beat Catania 2-1 courtesy of strikes from Giampaolo Pazzini and Daniele Gastaldello. Takayuki Morimoto replied for Catania, who also had Augustyn Blazej sent off after 77 minutes.

Palermo were also 2-1 winners over Napoli with Edinson Cavani and Fabrizio Miccoli from the penalty spot on the scoresheet for the home side. Marek Hamsik found the target for Napoli, who have not won away from home since beating Lazio on 26 October.

Livorno and Cagliari played out a goalless draw, while a last-minute goal from Antonio Di Natale earned Udinese a 2-2 draw at home to Parma. Di Natale also scored from the penalty spot for Udinese before the interval, with goals from Alberto Paloschi and Alessandro Lucarelli sandwiching that strike.
