Adelaide United know they face a tough task in halting free-scoring Gold Coast United tomorrow night, but coach Aurelio Vidmar is not ruling out bringing an early end to the new A-League franchise's undefeated season dream.

Gold Coast, whose owner Clive Palmer boldly declared his team would go through its inaugural season without losing, top the early table alongside Sydney with the only 100 per cent records after two games after making an impressive start to life in the Australian top-flight with wins over Brisbane Roar and North Queensland Fury.

The combination between last season's A-League top scorer Shane Smeltz, who plundered four goals in the 5-0 rout of North Queensland last week to take his season tally already to five, Joel Porter and Jason Culina has been the driving force behind Gold Coast's dream start to the season.

And Vidmar, who is boosted by the return of striker Lloyd Owusu, defender Daniel Mullen and Cassio, knows the Reds must aim to keep the trio quiet at Hindmarsh Stadium as last season's runners-up seek a second win of the season.

"It's a pretty strong statement (going through undefeated) but when you look at the team they assembled, they've probably got all of the possibilities of achieving that," Vidmar said.

"But we're confident in our own ability, we've had our first loss of the season and lacked intensity in the last 20 minutes last week but our preparation up to this point has been spot on."

Every game the past couple years has ended up with a lot of goals, a lot of cards, a lot of action. This year probably won't be any different.

On Saturday, Sydney face unbeaten local rivals Central Coast Mariners at Bluetongue Stadium in what is expected to be another fierce battle. The last three contests between the Mariners and Sydney in Gosford have seen a total of 17 goals and three red cards.

"They're always big games," said Sydney striker Alex Brosque. "They are our closest rivals. Every game the past couple years has ended up with a lot of goals, a lot of cards, a lot of action. This year probably won't be any different."

Defending champions Melbourne Victory picked up their first point of the season last week against Brisbane Roar and will be confident of recording a first win on Saturday against a North Queensland side struggling to adapt to A-League life.

The Fury have shipped eight goals in defeats to Sydney and Gold Coast, although Melbourne could be forced to re-shuffle their makeshift defence with Matthew Kemp's wife expected to give birth over the weekend and left-back Evan Berger struggling with a groin complaint.

On Sunday, Wellington Phoenix travel to Brisbane, while Perth Glory look to pick up their first points of the season against unbeaten Newcastle Jets. Perth are expected to be without midfielder Victor Sikora, who suffered a thigh injury after opening the scoring during last week's defeat at Wellington.
