PSV Eindhoven have confirmed midfielder Edison Mendez will leave the club and return to his homeland Ecuador.

The 30-year-old had recently expressed a desire to go back to South America and has now agreed a move to his former team Liga de Quito.

"We knew he wanted to return home to his family," said coach Fred Rutten. "In the short time I have worked with him he has shown himself to be a real professional, but this is the time for him to go back."

Mendez added: "I have had three very good years here. PSV are a great club, we have been the league champions and played some great games in the Champions League.

"I am very grateful to PSV for giving me the opportunity to return home. I will always have fond memories of PSV."

Mendez won the Eredivisie title with PSV in 2007 and 2008.
