Bayer Leverkusen stepped up their preparations for the upcoming season by defeating top-flight newcomers Freiburg 2-1 in their latest friendly.

Goals from Toni Kroos and Theofanis Gekas earned Jupp Heynckes' side a confidence-boosting victory just a fortnight before they begin their Bundesliga campaign away to another newly-promoted side, Mainz.

Their opening-day opponents snatched a 1-1 draw against Spanish side Getafe. Elkin Soto netted in the last minute of a match wherein Mainz fielded a largely reserve team due to injuries and illness.

Grafite finds the net
Meanwhile, Wolfsburg won their warm-up match 1-0 against Bulgarian side FC Burgas ahead of next weekend's DFB Pokal first-round game. Grafite earned and scored a penalty to give the Wolves the victory at their training camp in Austria.

Wolfsburg face Real Mallorca on Monday before travelling to Wehen Wiesbaden on Friday night for their first serious test of the season.

Seven days later, the defending champions kick off the 2009/10 season at home to Stuttgart.
