Cologne are preparing to make Portugal international Maniche their second big-name transfer this summer and reunite him with his compatriot Petit.
The Atletico Madrid midfielder has already agreed terms with the Bundesliga club and a transfer should go through today, according to Cologne's general manager Michael Meier.
"We have an agreement with the player and, assuming the (fitness) tests prove to be negative, we will take Maniche under contract," he said.
The 31-year-old would be a major coup for Cologne, who have also landed Germany international Lukas Podolski from Bayern Munich.
The former Chelsea and Inter Milan midfielder should play alongside Petit in the centre of the Cologne midfield next season.
