Atletico Madrid have confirmed that coach Abel Resino has signed a new one-year deal at the Vicente Calderon.
Resino was only due to remain in the post until the end of the season, but his ability to turn around Atletico's failing fortunes in the second half of the campaign made him a candidate to take up the position full time.
The former Castellon coach was put in charge following the dismissal of Javier Aguirre in February, and subsequently guided the club to a top-four finish and back into the UEFA Champions League. That achievement saw Atletico offer him and his staff all new contracts which they duly signed.
"Abel Resino will be the coach of Atletico Madrid next season (2009/2010)," read a statement on the club website. "After the board accepted on 4 June the proposal of the club's sporting director, Jesus Garcia-Pitarch, the coach from Velada put his signature on the contract on Friday morning.
"Abel, who will be presented on Monday 8 June, arrived at the club last February and after several months of intense work was able to accomplish the goal that the club had set, which was to qualify the team for Champions League.
"The coach will continue accompanied by the same staff, which is formed by Santi Denia (assistant coach), Miguel Peiro (fitness coach), Miguel Baston (goalkeeping coach) and Juan Sabas (technical assistant)."
